Hi FRIENDS!! I am starting a new series on the blog today – my HOME RENOVATION SERIES!! May 15th, 2021 marked 6 years of living in our first home, and ONE YEAR AGO also marked the day we started demoing our old floors. We disliked them from day one so this was a big day for us!! The floors were the MAJOR project in the house, so I wanted to share our progress with you as we went along! It was crazy living through a construction zone for the past year, but it was so worth it! Our house is finally becoming the home we’ve always wanted!
The first room to be finished was the LIVING ROOM.
Technically the living room wasn’t fully completed first, but it was the first room we completed the floors in and put the room back together! After the floors, we still had window trim to paint and new blinds to put in, plus we just recently started a new project in the same room. (If you follow me on IG, you may already know, but I’m going to save that one for it’s own video later down the line)
We chose to replace our nasty carpet with LVP (Luxury Vinyl Plank) flooring – Life Proof Flooring from Home Depot – it’s a floating floor and waterproof! We had gone back and forth on the color for over a year before deciding and ended up choosing our original favorite, Walton Oak. My husband has been the one doing all the work removing the old flooring and installing the new, which has been such a blessing. I have to give a HUGE SHOUT OUT to him because he did such a great job and put so much hard work and effort into making this house what it is now!
We also chose to update all of the trim to a white trim. The house had a mix of different trim all over from the super yellow/orange oak, to a super dark old trim, to a hodgepodge of different door trim used as baseboard trim… basically, it looked awful and didn’t match and we thought white would look the best! We tossed all of the old baseboard trim and we chose to replace it with PVC trim. The window trim and doors around the main level of the house are being painted instead of replaced. What a difference trim color makes!! The white really pops.
{Each episode in this series will have a corresponding YouTube video – see the SERIES PLAYLIST HERE!}
Below I’m sharing before/after and progress pictures, along with links to as much as I can find with the decor.
BEFORE
When we moved into this house, the carpet was already nasty, the walls were so dark with a wine/burgundy color – in the entry way and along the wall that went from our living room to our dining room. The adjacent wall was a grey that pulled from the burgundy to look almost purple too! In the first couple of years living in the house, we did a LOT OF PAINTING! Changing out the wall colors made it so much more bright and open!
The carpet may not look bad here, but it was because we shampooed it..A LOT and it always looked good for about a week or so until the stains started coming back through. The hallway was the worst!!
DURING THE RENOVATIONS
Conor started in the main hallway and worked his way into the living room. Since we were living through the remodel, we had to be strategic about how we went about demoing each room so that we could still have space to live. Overall, it worked out pretty well!
AFTER
The flooring turned out AMAZING and made such a huge difference! We painted the ledge on the right in the photo below white, but didn’t make it to the window trim until months later when we replaced the blinds as well, but it all looks so much better!
The photo below shows just after the living room was completed, before the new rug was added. We knew we needed an area rug to break up the colors of the flooring compared to the sofas. With or without the rug, it still looked so much better!
